I have recently lost someone close to me – who can I talk to about it?

St Helens Bereavement Service, based at Tontine House (WA10 1BD) provides a confidential individual befriending service to offer emotional and social support to people (aged 18+) who have recently suffered as a result of bereavement.

There is an affiliated Bereavement Social Group that meets up on a weekly basis at the Millennium Centre. The group is a place for people to meet and socialise with others who have gone through similar experiences in an informal setting. A similar group takes place in Rainford every fortnight - contact the Bereavement Service for further information about the two groups.

St John's Church (Earlestown, WA12 9BS) run a support group called 'Lynk-Up' for those who have lost someone close to them and may be feeling lonely or unable to cope.  The group takes place between 2pm and 4pm on the third Thursday of every month in a relaxed and informal environment.

Cruse Bereavement Care is the UK’s largest bereavement charity and aims to promote the wellbeing of bereaved people and enables anyone bereaved by death to understand their grief and cope with their loss. Their telephone support-line (0844 477 9400) is available every weekday for someone to talk to.

Self-help books and CDs are available to help with bereavement through the 'Books on Prescription' service available at your local library.

Further information about local services to help with bereavement can also be found through the Mental Health Directory.

There are also various support lines available for specific types of bereavement, for example child death. Please see the other FAQs in the bereavement section.
