What is a Credit Union and are there any in St Helens?Posted Wednesday 18th April 2018

Credit Unions are small non-profit organisations set-up to benefit the local community, where members collect their savings together to lend to each other and help to run the Credit Union. They aim to help you take control of your money by encouraging you to save what you can, and borrow only what you can afford to repay. Credit Unions are able to offer small loans, savings/bank accounts and pre-paid cards.

There are two Credit Unions that run in St Helens:

What can the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) help with?Posted Wednesday 18th April 2018

St Helens Citizens Advice Bureau, located on the second floor of the Millennium Centre, provides confidential, independent and free advice on a whole range of topics including debt, benefits, housing, employment, consumerism, travel, education, health and taxes. There is also help available online through the CAB’s adviceguide website.

They operate a drop-in session between 10am and 1pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Millennium Centre. Alternatively, you can ring for advice or an appointment outside these hours by calling 0844 826 9694* (*If the enquiry is relating to debt or benefits please contact 01744 737 866 instead of the main number). Phone lines are open between 9am and 5pm Mondays to Thursdays and 9am to 4pm on Fridays.

CAB also runs outreach venues at Sutton Academy (WA9 5AU) on Wednesdays from 10am to 12pm and also at Crownway Community Centre (WA12 9DA) on Fridays from 10am to 1pm. This is a drop-in service and so no appointment is necessary.

Where can I find information and support for debt problems?Posted Wednesday 18th April 2018

Christians Against Poverty is a national debt counselling charity with a network of 160 centres based in local churches, offering hope and a solution to anyone in debt (not just Christians). They can work with you to identify steps to overcome debt problems, money-management courses and self-help options. CAP is based at the Christian Life Centre (WA10 2DT) and Billinge Family Church (WN5 7DT), and appointments can be made by calling 0800 328 0006.

Citizens Advice Bureau can also offer confidential, independent and free advice around debt. They hold a number of drop-in sessions at the Millennium Centre and outreach venues at Sutton Academy (WA9 5AU) and Crownway Community Centre (WA12 9DA). Call 01744 737 866 for further information or to make an appointment.

Age UK also have a Money Advice Service for older people who are experiencing debt issues.

MoneyART deliver creative money management courses through the arts to enable people of all ages to manage their money with confidence. They deliver their courses in a variety of locations across St Helens – visit their website for further details.

There is also a national NHS Credit Crunch stress-line (0300 123 2000) available to help people with problems created by the recession.

CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) is about supporting men, particularly those aged 15-35. It’s about giving you a break, a way of getting things off your chest and sorting your head out. If you’re going through a tough time and live on Merseyside then they could help you get back to enjoying your life. They provide a helpline (0800 58 58 58) and a website full of information, blogs and stories on issues relating to depression and suicide.

The current economic climate has brought about significant increases in the cost of living expenses – if you are looking for help and support around budgeting or managing your money, the following organisations might be able to help:

  • The Money Advice Service is an independent organisation that provides clear and unbiased money advice to help people make informed choices about their finances. Their website contains useful reports, tools and planners to help you manage your money and the service also has a dedicated helpline available on 0300 500 5000.

Where can I find support with applying for benefits?Posted Wednesday 18th April 2018

DirectGov run an online Benefits Adviser service to obtain information about benefits for you or for someone else. The service is useful to check which benefits you may be entitled to, and to gain an estimate of benefits, tax credits or pension that may be available. There are also a number of helplines available for further support including:

  • Jobseekers allowance: 0800 055 6688

  • Child benefit: 0845 3021 444
  • Benefits for disabled people/Carers: 0800 882 200

St Helens Citizens Advice Bureau can help you claim your full benefits entitlement by checking that you are receiving all the benefits to which you may be entitled to, completing forms for you and helping you with reviews/appeals. They also have a number of fact sheets that provide simple answers on a range of benefits.

The Family Information Service can provide you with information about financial help related to families – for example if you are a parent with a pre-school or school aged child, expecting a baby, a lone parent, a student, a teenage parent or caring for a sick/disabled child.

Where can I go for help in finding employment?Posted Wednesday 18th April 2018

Starting Point is a place where you can receive free information, advice and guidance on jobs, education and training in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. All services are completely free and they offer assistance and coaching to help you find a job, write a CV or start training – in some instances they can also provide funding to help you get there. Starting Point also run the National Careers Service and ‘Work Clubs’ across St Helens, where you can share experiences with other people who are looking for work. St Helens Chamber (who manage Starting Point) also have a number of courses and initiatives to help people back into work.

Positive Directions – The Growth Company is a not for profit organisation dedicated to economic development, inward investment, skills, employment and enterprise. The Growth Company offers a programme called Positive Directions which works across a range of areas to help people get back on their feet; whether they’ve been unemployed for a long time, are on benefits or are recovering from health issues or some form of substance abuse.

Talent Match is an employability programme that supports young people aged 15-29 in St Helens who have been out of work, training or education for 12 months. It is a creative and innovative programme that will develop real skills and open up opportunities for young people. The programme offers intensive support through a dedicated Intensive Mentor who will develop a personalised pathway programme for each young person.

The local Job Centre Plus office (2 Central Street, WA10 1UF) provides a wide range of information and help in finding employment, in addition to a live feed of available jobs in the borough. You can also search for a job online or by calling the phone service on 0845 6060 234.

The Job Centre Plus can also refer you on to the Work Programme; providing employment support, financial support and health support if you are claiming ESA (Employment and Support Allowance) or IB (Incapacity Benefit)

The Apex Charitable Trust seeks to help people with criminal records to obtain appropriate jobs or self-employment by providing them with the skills that they need in the labour market, and by working with employers to break down the barriers to their employment. (more…)

How do I get the Winter Fuel Payment or information about insulating my home?Posted Wednesday 18th April 2018

If you are aged 60 or above you may be entitled to a tax free payment (called Winter Fuel Payment) to help keep you warm during winter – the amount you receive depends on your personal circumstances (e.g. who you live with and how much pension you receive). The Winter Fuel Payments helpdesk (0845 915 1515) provides information about Winter Fuel payment, guidance on reporting changes to your circumstances and claim forms.

The Home Heat Helpline advises people worried about paying their fuel bills and keeping warm during the winter. It also gives advice to low income households in urgent need of heating help and advice. The helpline is free and open Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm on 0800 33 66 99.

St Helens Home Improvement Agency’s Affordable Warmth Unit (AWU) can help you save energy, reduce your fuel bills and improve your standard of living. They can also help you access heating and insulation grants, resolve problems with utility companies and provide general information about heating your home. The AWU can be contacted on 01744 671 611 or 01744 676 555.

I don’t have any furniture for my home – who can help?Posted Wednesday 18th April 2018

TANGO is a charity based in Haydock that help many individuals and families with specific needs by delivering furniture, household goods and equipment to their door. They have a Family Liaison Team who work in partnership with other agencies (e.g. Social Services and Helena Partnerships) and may be able to provide furniture free of charge, depending on your circumstances.

TANGO also have a charity shop and warehouse full of goods at very reasonable prices.

Who can help with repairs, improvements and adaptations in my home?Posted Wednesday 18th April 2018

St Helens Home Improvement Agency can provide practical help in finding a contractor to carry out home maintenance – covering the whole process from beginning to end by identifying what is wrong with your home, to helping you find an approved contractor and checking the work after it is finished. They also provide information about home safety and security, energy saving/efficiency and aids/adaptations to help maintain independent living.

Where can I find support with homelessness?Posted Wednesday 18th April 2018

Hope House (103 Church Street, also known as the ‘Soupie’) provides various services for the homeless, those at risk of homelessness and substance misusers:

  • The Urban Café provides essential nutritional and personal care including breakfast club, emergency food hampers, shower and laundry facilities
  • An advice and advocacy service that aims to provide service users with support to secure accommodation, access drug/alcohol treatment and health services

The Housing Options and Advice service has a legal duty to prevent homelessness, and is able to offer a variety of options or actions depending on your circumstances. You can either telephone the service or call in person, and trained officers will listen carefully to your problems and discuss the appropriate solutions.

There are also two main hostels within St Helens that provide emergency accommodation:

  • St Helens YMCA
  • Salvation Army

The housing/homelessness charity Shelter does not have a branch in St Helens, however their free national helpline (0808 800 4444) can give you immediate and practical assistance, explain your rights, offer advice/guidance and suggest specialist or local support services to help you in the longer term. Shelter also operate the Community Legal Advice helpline (0845 345 4345) and Homeowner helpline (0300 3300 515) for those struggling to pay their mortgage.
